Shalom offers so much! Opportunities to play sport; social and cultural activities to choose from; and really great academic support from tutors! The low ratio of residents to tutors is something you just don’t get everywhere. The residents’ society, RESSOC, is really active and they try to cater for everyone. |
Social and Cultural Activities
Social
Shalom College prides itself on its vibrant social life with regular activities arranged by tutors and the college’s resident society, RESSOC.
Throughout the year, residents are invited to engage in events such as musical, sporting, indoor and outdoor activities, which are all designed to appeal to a broad range of interests.
UNSW is also home to over 100 clubs and societies on campus covering a diverse range of interests including sporting, social, religious, hobby and intellectual fields. College residents are encouraged to participate in social activities arranged on campus by groups such as ARC, the UNSW student organisation.
Less than 20 minutes by bus from the centre of Sydney, Shalom College is also centrally located to provide ready access to all that Sydney has to offer from restaurants, entertainment and shopping.
A number of Shalom College residents also participate in various charitable programs such as the Red Cross and Habitat for Humanity.
Cultural
Shalom College seeks to provide an enriched cultural experience for all residents through exposure to a diverse range of cultural events as well as in-house musical and talent evenings.
Each semester Shalom College hosts formal dinners with invited guest speakers who offer our residents access to a range of views and ideas.
Some recent talks by guest speakers at formal dinners include:
- The Story of My Journey - So Far by Indigenous Professor of Medicine, Dr Lisa Jackson Pulver
- Life, Perseverance & Striving for Excellence by Olympic Gold Medallist & World Swimming Champion, Elka Graham
- Leadership My Way by Ernst & Young Australia CEO, Brian Schwartz
- Comedy in Film: What do Borat, Woody Allen, Mel Brooks and Ben Stiller have in common? by Film Critic Don Perlgut
- Making a Difference: My Contribution by current and past Shalom College residents committed to Social Justice
- The Holocaust: A Personal Testimony by Holocaust survivor Lotte Weiss and The Armenian Genocide by Armenian politician Gladys Berejiklian.
In addition, as part of the many social activities organised by tutors and RESSOC, there are outings to theatre shows and music concerts.
